Atlanta Team Tennis Association--ATTA
Join a Team!
|
Atlanta is a tennis town! In all likelihood, on Mondays you can't help
but overhear your coworkers, neighbors or even total strangers boast or groan about how their tennis teams fared in matches
played over the previous weekend.
If you're already a tennis player, chances are you're already on a tennis team.
If you're unhappy on your existing tennis team or new to the Atlanta tennis scene (either just moved to Atlanta or taking
up the sport for the first time or returning after a period of absence), now's the perfect opportunity to get involved
and change teams or join an ATTA team!
There are two popular, team-format tennis leagues in Atlanta --the United States Tennis
Association (USTA) leagues and the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA)* leagues. ATTA is a Community Tennis Association
of USTA
Georgia, but ATTA is not affiliated in any way with ALTA*. We do, however, form teams of
primarily gay and lesbian players to participate in the leagues offered by USTA and ALTA*. ATTA has men's, women's,
and mixed teams competing in each league at all levels of skill. Our teams compete against teams representing country
clubs, subdivisions, public parks, and gyms across metro Atlanta.
Advantages to being on an ATTA team include:
*You can be yourself-- gay, lesbian, or straight --while on and off the court and you'll
find that acceptance, camaraderie, and team spirit are enhanced by being on a primarily gay or lesbian team.
*Many of our teams have professional coaches for practice which offers the chance of improving your
tennis skills.
*Many establish life-long friendships with people they meet on their teams.
*Each ATTA team (10 or more paid members) making the City Finals will receive $100 to offset
the catering/food expense for the team refreshments.
|
The regular
season for each league is seven weeks followed by playoffs of the top teams in each division to determine City Champions.
Here are a few specifics regarding the ALTA* and USTA leagues.
ALTA*:
Men's and women's teams play in spring (March-April) and fall (September-October). Each team (men on Saturday morning, and
women on Sunday afternoon) plays 10 players each week in 5 doubles matches against another team. Mixed doubles teams
play in summer (June-August on Saturday mornings) and winter (January-March on Sunday afternoons) with the same format. League
standings are based on total matches won during the season.
USTA:
Men's and women's teams play in summer on Sunday afternoons (women at 12:30 and men at 4:30) and in winter on Saturdays
(men at 9:00am and women at 1:00pm). Each team plays 8 players per week (2 singles matches and 3 doubles matches) against
another team. Mixed doubles is played in the spring, with three matches (6 players) played on Friday evenings.

The best way for you to find
and possibly join an ATTA team of players
with similar skill level and personalities
is to come to a mixer or to Open Play
doubles on several different Saturday
afternoons (see "About ATTA" on toolbar at
left) where you'll meet other ATTA members
and get to know them. Ask them if they
are on a team and if their team captain is
looking to add additional players. Get
contact phone numbers and e-mail addresses
of those you meet and enjoy playing with.
Ask the desk personnel at Glenlake if they
know of teams looking for players. If
this doesn't work or if you're brand new to
Atlanta or ATTA and you need
immediate assistance in finding/joining a
team, or if you simply have questions
regarding ATTA teams,
please write to the
ATTA's teams coordinator, Thanh Doan.
Please include a complete name, and contact
phone number where you can be reached along
with your gender and your approximate skill
level. In some cases, it's much
easier to help you determine exactly what
you're looking for in a team with a
conversation versus e-mail exchanges.
